Newt Gingrich's tweeted praise for late night comedian Stephen Colbert at the Kennedy Center honors Sunday night earned him notice on the Comedy Central star's program Monday night.
Colbert appeared at the program to honor cellist Yo-Yo Ma, joking that he was there to "cell-ibrate" his contributions to art.
Gingrich seemed to appreciate the pun, tweeting, "“Stephen colbert was brilliant at kennedy center honors tonight.”
Colbert faux-celebrated his shout-out at the top of his show Monday evening.
“Newt Gingrich said I’m brilliant, okay - and Newt reserves his Twitter feed for things of the utmost importance,” Colbert said.
Colbert than citied two tweets - which have since been deleted - where Gingrich talks about eating Reese's peanut butter cups for breakfast.
But, Colbert joked, Gingrich was no paid lobbyist for the candy company.
“They gave him $1.5 million because he’s a well-known chocolate historian,” Colbert said.
That quip was in reference to Gingrich's claim that he did not lobby for, but rather provided historical insight, to troubled mortgage giant Freddie Mac.
