Analyst: Obama must prove Asia pivot is more than a ‘bumper sticker’

A prominent foreign policy analyst says President Obama needs to prove that his “pivot” to the Asia-Pacific is more than just symbolism.

Jonathan Pollack of the Brookings Institution said Obama needs to take advantage of his trip this week to Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Philippines to show his commitment to the region is more than just a “bumper sticker.”

The trip is a chance to make progress on the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement, Pollack said, which he said could pave the way for China to join the arrangements.
