Gov. Christie: 'If the joke is funny, I laugh, even if it’s about me'

By Judy Kurtz - 02/05/13 02:05 PM ET

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) made light of the many late-night jokes about his waistline by chowing down on a doughnut during a “Late Show with David Letterman” appearance.

As Christie sat down for a Monday interview, the comedian noted, “I make jokes about you — not just one or two here or there.”

Christie responded by whipping out a jelly doughnut and taking a bite. “I didn’t know this was going to be this long,” the politician deadpanned, to laughs from Letterman.

“From my perspective, if the joke is funny, I laugh, even if it’s about me,” Christie said. “If it’s not funny, I don’t laugh. But I’ve never felt like it was anything that really bugged me all that much.”

After saying he found about 40 percent of the jokes about him laugh-worthy, Christie proclaimed, “I’m basically the healthiest fat guy you’ve ever seen in your life.”

“Well, there’s your campaign poster right there!” Letterman quipped.

Later in the show, the politician asked Letterman if he could read a few of his favorite jokes that Letterman had cracked about him. Saying his office keeps track of all the remarks about him, he said to the TV host, “You’re up to 362,000 — and that’s just the fat jokes.”

He proceeded to read two of his fave digs: “Celebrity birthday today — Chris Christie turned 50. He blew out the candles on his cake and he wished for another cake.”

After Christie finished retelling the “Late Show” jokes, Letterman grabbed the doughnut in mock embarrassment and took a big bite.
