'SNL' skit botches lawmakers' names

But Cummings seemed unfazed by the snafu. When we asked what he thought of the name foul-up, he told us via email, “I enjoyed watching ‘Saturday Night Live’s’ interpretation of our hearing. It was very entertaining.”

Hastings’s office says having the same name as another member of Congress can often lead to some mixups. Spokesman Neal Kirby tells ITK in an email, “While my boss is often confused with Congressman Alcee Hastings of Florida, him being confused with Congressman Elijah Cummings is a new one.”

Kirby points out that Hastings and Cummings weren’t the only ones suffering from a case of mistaken identity on the popular late-night comedy show. A nameplate showed Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) as Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.).

An NBC publicist for “Saturday Night Live” did not return ITK’s request for comment.

UPDATE (5:20 p.m.): Rep. Hastings tweeted Monday about the show, writing:
