MSNBC host Matthews: GOP trying to 'delegitimize' Obama

"It seems there's a very compelling continuing effort to delegitimize the president," Matthews said. "People on the right say he's a disaster, which he's not. Look at what he's already accomplished."

Matthews said Obama deserves more praise for his efforts to implement healthcare reform and for "getting the bad guys," a possible reference to Osama bin Laden's capture in May 2011.

"They refer to the healthcare act as just 'a bill,' " Matthews said. "They don't even speak the language we normally speak in civilized political debate."

Matthews added that the GOP is deliberately acting as if Obama is not a present political force.

"They've changed it so much that he's not actually supposed to be there," Matthews said. "That's a way to put an asterisk next to him, like Barry Bonds. ... 'He didn't really get elected president,' I think that's what they're up to."
