Late-night smash: US prepares to take on Syria

"Vice President Joe Biden said today that Syria must be held accountable," Leno said. "Unfortunately the Obama administration has never hired an accountant, so we have no idea how to do that."

"Late Show" host David Letterman took a more serious approach with his opening monologue, saying the proposed attacks on Syria would lead to long-term fighting.

"Hey, this is going to be an enjoyable switch for Obama — now he can start a war that the next president will be stuck with," Letterman said. "So it's a little bit of a change-up there.

"They're saying now that the war against Syria will last no more than two days," he continued. "Well, you know what that means: we'll be there for another 10 years."
