MSNBC's Matthews: US needs to be more diplomatic with Assad

"Would somebody please explain to me what our goal is in Syria?" Matthews asked on "Morning Joe." "That's a real problem. Why don't we get our heads straight about what we want?

"We've never said to Assad about what we are willing to offer him," Matthews said. "You keep talking about negotiations? You die, that's our negotiating position."

Host Joe Scarborough said Obama has received global — not just national — criticism for not having a cemented military strategy in Syria.

"They have criticized him for not having a strategy," Scarborough said. "[He hasn't had a strategy] this week, not this year, not over the past two years."
