Speaking on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports, Mikulski said Cruz sought to delay a Thursday night vote on the Senate resolution to continue funding the government so that his supporters could watch the spectacle of a vote on Friday during the day.

“The reason that Ted Cruz stood up and asked for a delay was so that he could have a vote during the day that the Tea Baggers in his Tea Party are going to watch,” Mikulski said. “This is why I’ve repeatedly said, the greatest deliberative body in the world has become the greatest delay body in the world.”

Democrats have ramped up the harsh rhetoric against Republicans in recent days, as the GOP demands the defunding of ObamaCare in legislation that would keep the government open past Sept. 30.

White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer on Thursday compared Republicans to terrorists and arsonists.

“We are for cutting spending,” Pfeiffer said. “What we’re not for is negotiating with people with a bomb strapped to their chest. We’re not going to do that.”

“What the House Republicans are not asking for is a negotiation,” he added. “It’s a negotiation if I’m trying to sell you my house and we are debating the price of it. It is not a negotiation if I show up at your house and say, ‘Give me everything inside or I’m going to burn it down.’ ”

Al Gore on Friday called Republicans “political terrorists.”
