Group hits Lindsey Graham on immigration in TV ads

By Cameron Joseph - 02/26/13 10:44 AM ET

A group that strongly opposes proposed immigration reform is hitting Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) for his support of the plan, ripping it as "amnesty" on South Carolina airwaves.

"Who elected Lindsey Graham to demand millions more immigrant workers when so many South Carolinians are jobless?" asks the narrator in an ad from NumbersUSA. The group supports decreasing the level of immigration to the United States and has played a big role in scuttling the push for immigration reform in 2006 and 2007.

"Who elected Sen. Graham to insist on more green cards for foreign workers when returning veterans can't find jobs? Who elected Graham to demand amnesty and welfare for millions of illegal aliens? Who does Lindsey Graham represent?" the ad asks.

Graham, a member of the bipartisan "Gang of Eight" senators crafting a comprehensive immigration plan, is up for reelection in 2014 and faces a potential challenge from the right.

While most local Graham detractors have focused on his fiscal voting record rather than immigration, if the issue becomes as controversial as it has been in the past it could hurt Graham's chances at reelection, which currently appear strong.
