The American Bridge 21st Century video features a montage of news clips and speeches in which Rubio discusses the influence of his family’s story on his life.
On Thursday, The Washington Post reported that Rubio’s accounts embellished facts about his parents’ arrival in the United States from Cuba. The paper said documents show that his parents were admitted for permanent U.S. residence more than two-and-a-half years before Cuban dictator Fidel Castro came to power.
Rubio vehemently rejected the Post report.
“To suggest my family’s story is embellished for political gain is outrageous,” Rubio said on the Post website. “The dates I have given regarding my family’s history have always been based on my parents’ recollections of events that occurred over 55 years ago and which were relayed to me by them more than two decades after they happened.”
Rubio’s life story as the son of Cuban parents in exile has proved compelling to voters during his rise through politics in Florida.
