Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) on Monday previewed the Republican response to President Obama's State of the Union address, saying that he expected the president's address to be "a retread of the last three years."
Cornyn argued that some of the president's proposals that have leaked — including a program to help homeowners with their mortgages and an attempt to push down the cost of a college education — were more examples of Democrats trying to solve problems through government spending.
"What the president doesn't appreciate, I think, is our free enterprise system," Cornyn said during an interview on Fox News.
The Texas senator also noted that the president's address would come on the 1,000th day since the last budget was passed by both chambers of Congress.
"Because Harry Reid will not allow a budget to come to the floor … we've still got the same problem we always had — runaway spending, a huge debt overhang, which is killing economic growth — in other words, jobs — and we've got a regulatory environment where we see a lot of overreach that is causing a lot of job creators to sit on the sidelines," Cornyn said.
Cornyn also complained that the media were unfairly characterizing Republicans as responsible for congressional intransigence.
"It does seem that the mainstream media is acting as a cheerleader for the president," Cornyn said.
