Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) on Tuesday said Russia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev, had reverted to totalitarianism and praised anti-government reformers in the country.
"Voices are being heard, there is a thread of truth coming from the almost iron curtain of authoritarianism we have reverted to in Russia," said Wicker from the Senate floor.
Wicker, along with Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), is sponsoring a bill, the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act, that would seek to punish Russian officials for complicity in the 2009 death of Russian whistleblower Sergei Magnitsky.
