Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) on Wednesday recommended rapper Nicki Minaj to disgruntled fans of ’70s-era music group the Bee Gees.
The popular freshman senator admitted he might have gone “too far” in
jokingly mocking the Bee Gees to a Republican crowd in Florida over the
weekend. But he was far from backing down on Wednesday, tweeting a
suggestion for what "good music" really sounds like.
“The ’70s were a very frightening time,” Rubio said in a speech last weekend, recorded by Florida's conservative news site Shark Tank. “Jimmy Carter was president. We had a president who lied to the American people … Most troubling of all, we had to overcome disco, and bellbottoms, and the Bee Gees. … All right, I went too far.”
Marco copped last April to enjoying Minaj. At that time, he told conservative online news site the Daily Caller that he gets "in trouble" for talking about what's on his iPod — and the "grief" he took over the Bee Gees comment included some good-natured boos from the crowd — but he admitted to enjoying a "diverse" selection ranging from Eminem to Coldplay to "some historical stuff from back in the day." If that includes the Bee Gees, Rubio did not mention it.
"I don't let my kids listen to any of this stuff," he added.
