McConnell backs Romney, expects 'close, hard-fought' election

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) on Tuesday endorsed Mitt Romney's bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

"I support Mitt Romney for president of the United States," McConnell said to reporters.

“He is going to be the nominee, and as you noticed, the party is in the process of unifying behind him and I think it's going to be an incredibly close, hard-fought race," he said.

"Everybody's bandying polls around, but look at the Gallup tracking poll yesterday actually had Gov. Romney with a two-point lead,” McConnell continued. “I think it’s going to be a very, very competitive election. We're all behind him and looking forward to the fall campaign, which is already under way.”
