Ayotte: Obama ‘outsourced’ his leadership to UN

By Vicki Needham - 07/29/12 01:45 PM ET

Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), a prominent Mitt Romney surrogate, took jabs at President Obama's foreign policy on Sunday, arguing he hasn't been aggressive enough with Syria or Iran and has made the United States "weaker" around the world.

Ayotte, who has been mentioned as a possible running mate for Romney, gave Obama credit for killing Osama bin Laden and upping drone attacks on al-Qaeda but said he has "outsourced his leadership to the United Nations" on Syria and hasn't done enough to stop Iran's quest for nuclear weapons.

“He was drug to the table, to the economic sanctions," she said Sunday on CNN’s "State of the Union." "The congressional leaders of both sides of the aisle are the ones that pushed stronger economic sanctions. It took years into his presidency to get those tougher economic sanctions in place.”

Ayotte accused Obama of initially opposing Iran sanctions, and said Tehran was closer to the "capability of having a nuclear weapon than when this president came into office.”

“Actually we haven't been as tough and we can be on sanctions,” she said.  “He could've done this sooner."

Top lawmakers in Congress are trying to reach an agreement on an Iran sanctions bill before leaving at the end of the week for the August recess.
