Murphy ad highlights McMahon WWE record

By Alexandra Jaffe - 08/24/12 12:29 PM ET

Rep. Chris Murphy (D-Ct.), Democratic candidate for Senate in Connecticut, is out with a new ad questioning challenger Linda McMahon's record while World Wrestling Entertainment, the company she ran with her husband.

The ad charges that McMahon, while CEO of WWE, denied employees benefits to increase profits and avoided taxes by shifting profits abroad. It says that McMahon's current plan is to cut taxes for the wealthy and cut Medicare and education.

"Linda McMahon. Always for her. Never for us," the ad closes.

Murphy's campaign indicated the ad is meant to reframe McMahon's image for Connecticut voters. She ran for Senate in 2010 but lost to Democrat Richard Blumenthal.

“It's time for the people of Connecticut to be re-introduced to the real Linda McMahon. She offshored profits and mistreated workers to make herself rich at the WWE, and now she's running for Senate to pad her pockets even further by proposing a $7 million tax cut for her and Vince,” said Murphy spokeswoman Taylor Lavender.

The latest Rasmussen poll, out this week, gives McMahon a slight lead over Murphy, but two polls prior to that showed Murphy ahead.
