Biden swears in Ed Markey as newest senator

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) warned senators that they wouldn’t have time to speak about Markey after he was sworn in.

“I know a lot of people want to say some good things about this man, but you’ll have to do it later,” Reid said. “We have a lot to do here.”

Massachusetts’ voters selected Markey in a special election last month to replace John Kerry, who left the Senate to serve as secretary of State. 

Sen. William “Mo” Cowen (D-Mass.) temporarily filled Kerry’s position until voters chose a long-term replacement.

Markey served in the House for more than 30 years, making environmental issues his primary focus.
