The government has been shut down since midnight Tuesday because lawmakers can’t agree on a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government. House Republicans have tried to attach riders to defund and delay ObamaCare, but Senate Democrats have said they will only accept a “clean” CR.
“Michele Bachmann — remember her, she ran for president last time around. She was the leading contender for about four hours,” Reid said. “This is what she said yesterday, ‘it’s exactly what we wanted and we got it.’ … Can you imagine anyone saying that when we have babies being turned away from life-saving treatment?”
Reid said Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) should stop listening to Cruz and Bachmann and instead hold an up-or-down vote on the Senate’s six-week CR.
“The only thing standing in the way is Speaker Boehner and the Tea Party Republican,” Reid said. “I would suggest [Boehner] stop taking advice from Bachman and Cruz.”
House Republicans' latest attempt is passing a piece-meal spending resolution to fund some parts of government.
Reid said that “cockamamie idea” had no chance in the Senate because President Obama has threatened to veto the measures.
It's unclear where the fight will go from here, with both sides digging in for the first government shutdown since 1997.
