Last year, Congress passed a bipartisan bill that will increase fuel economy by at least 40 percent and decrease greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles by at least 30 percent in 2020 [P.L. 110-140]. This landmark law was among the first comprehensive national programs to address global climate change and increase energy security. By contrast, a patchwork of state fuel economy standards would create market disruptions, increase compliance costs for vehicle manufacturers, and result in higher vehicle prices for consumers. The federal government should continue to oversee this activity and not cede this authority to any individual state.
