Janie Blanco credits her father’s career and interests for attracting her to Washington.
“My dad really likes politics," she says. "He’s in law enforcement, so mostly I was drawn to the law enforcement aspect of politics.”
Having studied political science at the University of Florida, Blanco says she knew where she wanted to end up.
“Everything kind of happens here, politics-wise,” Blanco says of the nation’s capital.
Now, she works for Invariant, a lobbying firm where she focuses on cybersecurity. She previously spent time on Capitol Hill in the nonpartisan office of the Senate Budget Committee.
Although she loves D.C.’s museums, Blanco says she misses the beaches of her home state of Florida and longs for some good Cuban food.
But she’s eager to keep soaking up knowledge in Washington.
“For me, it’s gaining as much personal and professional experience as I can,” she says. “I feel like you shouldn’t stop learning.”
