Rand takes swipe at Jeb

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) took a shot at former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R), a potential presidential primary rival, on Tuesday night, saying Bush misunderstands the Republican Party.

{mosads}Bush said on Monday at a Wall Street Journal event that a Republican nominee should not tack right in the primaries, and “lose the primary to win the general.”

Fox News host Megyn Kelly brought up the comments to Paul, saying Bush said “the GOP doesn’t need conservatives to win the White House.”

“I think your first mistake is when you talk about conservatives in the third person,” Paul said. “If you don’t consider that it’s a ‘we’ rather than ‘them,’ you really miss what’s going on in the Republican Party. We are a conservative party. As a conservative, I can’t understand really even referring to conservatives in the third person.”

Bush is seen as a more centrist Republican, with his support for immigration reform and the Common Core education standards, which some conservatives view as taking away local control of education.

Paul has had to play defense himself on his foreign policy views, facing questions from Wall Street Journal editorial page editor Paul Gigot on Tuesday.

Paul announced on Tuesday that he is running for reelection to the Senate, but has repeatedly said a presidential decision won’t come until the spring.

“I’ll make my decision probably in the March-April timeframe,” he said in the Fox News interview Tuesday night.

Paul also backed House Republicans’ emerging plan to take a largely symbolic vote of disapproval against President Obama’s immigration actions.

“One of the things the House is doing, which is good, is I understand they’re going to pass a bill that says this executive action would be repealed,” Paul said. “It won’t pass the Senate, but by showing their will and intention, I think it helps the constitutional case.”

Paul has suggested bringing a lawsuit against the actions.
