Priebus: ‘Violence only begets more violence’

“While we have differences, our right to free speech should be just that: speech,” Priebus said in a statement. “Violence is never the answer. Violence only begets more violence.” 

“Leaders and activists in both parties bear a responsibility to ensure that the discourse we engage in promotes the best of America,” he continued. 

Politicians on both sides of the aisle, including fellow presidential candidates, have called on Trump to take action in reducing clashes between his fans and protesters. 

A Chicago event on Friday night was cancelled due to security concerns after protesters flooded the area. 

Trump has declined to urge his supporters to rein in violence at his events.  

“The stakes for the election this November are high,” Priebus said. “While I hope all Americans exercise their First Amendment rights, we must do so in a manner that is respectful to our fellow Americans.”
