Trump's son thanks Maddow for proving his success to 'Trump hating followers'

President TrumpDonald John TrumpTrump alludes to possible 2024 run in White House remarks Trump threatens to veto defense bill over tech liability shield Tiger King's attorney believes they're close to getting pardon from Trump MORE's eldest son took to Twitter to knock MSNBC's Rachel Maddow after the network released information on the president's 2005 income and taxes he paid.

"Thank you Rachel Maddow for proving to your #Trump hating followers how successful @realDonaldTrump is & that he paid $40mm in taxes!," Donald Trump Jr. tweeted on Tuesday night.

After Maddow teased that the network would reveal details of a federal tax form from the president's 2005 return, the White House released a statement with the details itself, preempting the 9 p.m. Eastern show.

The White House reported that Trump paid $150 million in income and paid $38 million in federal taxes. The statement also knocked MSNBC for "illegally" publishing the report.

“You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago," the statement read.

"Despite this substantial income figure and tax paid, it is totally illegal to steal and publish tax returns. The dishonest media can continue to make this part of their agenda, while the President will focus on his, which includes tax reform that will benefit all Americans."

Disclosing a taxpayer's information without consent is illegal.
