Huckabee, HuckPAC shoot down report that he is reconsidering a 2012 run

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) is not getting into the race for the Republican presidential nomination, Huckabee said on television and a source close to him told The Hill.

A report that Huckabee was reconsidering his 2012 plans startled the political world Friday, but was immediately shot down.

“It’s news to me that I’m sitting down plotting my comeback,” Huckabee said Friday on Fox News.

A senior official with HuckPAC confirmed that the rumors had no truth.

{mosads}”The governor is still content with his decision to stay out of the race,” the official said.

The denial followed a report from Reuters that GOP activists underwhelmed by the current presidential field had approached Huckabee and urged him to get into the race to be the Republican nominee. The report cited two unnamed sources who said Huckabee was considering.

After publicly weighing a 2012 run for president, Huckabee announced in May that he had decided against it. Huckabee ran during the last presidential election and won the Iowa caucuses. But he had difficulty raising money and maintaining momentum.

A Huckabee run would be complicated by his current role with Fox News, where he hosts a self-titled television show. Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich had to sever their paid relationships with Fox News before officially entering the race, and Sarah Palin, another paid Fox contributor, faces a similar issue should she run for president.

Huckabee is scheduled to have Mitt Romney on his show this weekend.

Lingering dissatisfaction with the slate of Republican candidates competing to take on President Obama has prompted calls for additional candidates to enter the race. Palin, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and others have all been courted.
