A close adviser to Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif.) on Wednesday did not knock down rumors the five-term lawmaker is considering retirement, according to The Modesto Bee.

"Congressman Cardoza has not finalized his decision and will not for some time," said Cardoza Chief of Staff Robin Winchell Roberts.

Cardoza could be one of many House incumbents from California who don't return to Congress because of redistricting. The state's new congressional map differs greatly from the old map because it was drawn by a bipartisan commission, and has many more swing districts. Cardoza's district remains safely Democratic, but a nearby district held by his close friend, Rep. Jim Costa (D-Calif.), becomes winnable for Republicans.

A California Democratic consultant told The Hill in late July that Cardoza was considering leaving Congress to allow Costa to run from the district.
