Rep. Steve Rothman (D-N.J.) will challenge fellow Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell (N.J.) rather than run in an uphill race against Rep. Scott Garrett (R-N.J.), according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
Rothman's district was eliminated in a redistricting map approved last week. Almost half of his old district is now in Pascrell's district, while his hometown wound up in a Republican-leaning district containing most of Garrett's current territory.
The decision means a likely primary between two longtime members, both elected in 1996. Pascrell is 74 and has not said he will run for reelection.
It's also bad news for Democrats; Rothman would have been their best chance at taking out Garrett, and without him it's unclear whether they'll contest the seat or just concede a lost district in the state.
