{mosads}According to the latest Public Policy Poll, Gingrich landed the support of 47 percent of those surveyed, followed by Romney at 17 percent, Herman Cain at 15 percent, Ron Paul at five percent, Michele Bachmann at four percent, Jon Huntsman at three percent, Rick Perry at two percent and Rick Santorum at one percent.

The poll was conducted before an Atlanta businesswoman said she had a 13-year-long affair with Cain, and many believe Gingrich stands to benefit if the former Godfather’s Pizza executive’s support declines in the wake of another scandal.

For Romney, the latest PPP numbers show a 13 percent drop compared to the same poll in September, when he had 30 percent of the support.

Romney is also declining in personal popularity with Florida voters, where his favorability fell 14 points from 65 percent to 51 percent, while those who view him unfavorably rose by 14 points from 22 percent to 36 percent.

Gingrich’s favorability is at 72 percent in Florida, while only 21 percent view him unfavorably.

Earlier today, a Florida Times-Union poll showed Gingrich leading Romney by 24 percent. In that poll, Gingrich led the field with 41 percent support, followed by Romney at 17 percent.

“I have not seen a lead this large, this late in a Republican presidential primary season since I have been polling,” InsiderAdvantage pollster Matt Towery told the Times-Union. “Newt Gingrich is winning nearly 50% of the independent vote, but more importantly, the Republican vote which makes up the vast majority of the Florida Republican primary.”

Florida has one of the oldest Republican electorates in the country. According to PPP, Gingrich does even better among senior citizens, taking 54 percent of the over-65 vote.
