"While this continues to be a highly competitive race, Nelson is positioned to win reelection if he decides to run for another term," Hickman wrote in a memo.

Hickman's poll also showed Nelson being more popular among voters in his state than unpopular — another result that was the opposite of what the Magellan poll found.

The poll of 1,300 likely voters was conducted Nov. 5-10 using live telephone interviews and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
