Donald Trump’s former butler on Thursday said that the GOP presidential front-runner has a kinder heart than people realize.

“First of all, he’s an incredibly generous person,” Tony Senecal told host Carol Costello on CNN. “He’s generous to his employees [and] he’s generous to strangers.

Senecal said that both the media and Trump’s rivals for the Republican presidential nomination have mischaracterized the billionaire.

“He’s not the great, gruff person that people play him out to be. Sure, you attack him, he’s going to fight back.”

Senecal’s remarks come as the GOP presidential field prepares for its party’s twelfth debate, in Miami, later Thursday night.

Previous contests have featured heated clashes between Trump and the other GOP candidates. The eleventh debate, which took place in Detroit, for example, saw Trump comment on his manhood after Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) mocked the size of the business mogul’s hands.

Rubio late Wednesday said he regrets some of the attacks he’s leveled at Trump over his appearance and “small hands.”

“My kids were embarrassed by it, and if I had to do it again, I wouldn’t,” Rubio said.

Trump has frequently vowed he will speak harshly of anyone who criticizes him first, arguing he is an expert verbal “counter-puncher.”

He leads the Republican presidential field by over 14 points nationwide, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls.

The real estate tycoon has won 15 states in the GOP contest so far.
