"I just hugged the man who shook the hand of the Pope," DeVito said during a campaign rally for Sanders on Sunday when introducing the Vermont senator. Sanders met the pope over the weekend after speaking at a conference at the Vatican.
"We are going to go out and vote and put this man on Pennsylvania Avenue. ... Ladies and gentlemen, we are here for a hometown boy," Devito said to an audience of more than 28,000 in Brooklyn's Prospect Park.
He then led the audience in a "Bernie" chant.
When Sanders began to walk on to the stage at the rally, DeVito gave him a welcoming introduction.
"He's coming, baby. Here he comes ... ladies and gentlemen, the next president of the United States — our Obi Wan."
Sanders campaigned in New York on Sunday ahead of the state's Tuesday primary.
