"I've got a great idea that I thought about last night. I've figured out who Donald Trump's vice president should be," McCaskill said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"At least he learned how to apologize. He's got political experience. And that would be Todd Akin," she said.

"The perfect vice president for Donald Trump," she continued.

McCaskill faced off against Akin, a former Republican representative from Missouri, in her 2012 Senate run.

Akin at the time said abortions wouldn't be necessary for rape victims, noting that if it's "legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down." His remarks gained national attention and he lost his race.

The Missouri senator has attacked Trump in the past, calling him earlier this week a "buffoon" undeserving of the presidency.
