Kaine, Granholm said, is “as decent, honorable, selfless soul as you will ever meet. A man with the heart of a servant, who is ‘woke’.”
“Woke” is not an easy word to define. It grew to prominence as part of the Black Lives Matter movement, and has largely been used to mean a person aware of — and fighting against — systemic racism and bias in society.
According to Bustle, by 2011 the word “woke” “had begun to gain popularity as a way of describing an informed, questioning, self-educating individual, which is essentially how we use it today.”
Kaine is a controversial pick among liberals. He has backed some abortion restrictions, supported trade deals, and joined a push to deregulate some of the nation’s largest banks.
