“His comment connected to Ghazala Khan is connected to two things,” he said Monday on MSNBC, referring to the mother of Capt. Humayun Khan, who died in Iraq in 2004.

“His clear antipathy to people who are Muslim, connected with his misogyny."

“You put it together with what he said about Muslims, and Ghazala’s just the intersection of those two things. So, when you think about the things he said about women in general, no matter what their faith may be, it’s reprehensible,” said Ellison, one of two Muslims serving in Congress.

Khizr Khan, Humayun Khan’s father, during a speech at last week's Democratic National Convention fiercely challenged Trump’s rhetoric regarding Muslims.

“Have you even read the United States Constitution?” he asked in Philadelphia, brandishing a pocket-sized version of the document. "You have sacrificed nothing and no one.”

Trump pushed back against Khizr Khan’s criticism over the weekend before questioning whether the family’s faith restricted Ghazala Khan from speaking out.

“If you look at his wife, she was standing there,” he said on ABC News. "She had nothing to say. She probably — maybe she wasn’t allowed to say anything. You tell me.”

Ghazala Khan has said she stayed silent onstage because she was nervous and emotional, and finds it difficult to speak about her late son.

Ellison on Monday said the Khans should not let Trump’s remark detract from the sacrifices their son made for America.

“I just think this is a very important thing for every American to know that, you know, all sections, Muslim, Christian, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, people of no faith do their part in the military and out in service to this nation every day, and no hater like Donald Trump can take that away,” Ellison said.

“So, this is just Donald Trump being Donald Trump. He’s outrageous. He doesn’t respect anything the rest of us respect."
