Clinton camp: Trump fundraising a ‘wake up call’ to Clinton supporters: report

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign is warning top fundraisers they need to take action in light of Donald Trump’s July fundraising haul, Politico reported.

{mosads}In an internal memo that will be sent to high-level donors Monday morning, campaign manager Robby Mook said Trump “had his best fundraising month of the campaign, raising $80 million,” according to the news outlet.

“This was far more than anyone expected — and should be a wake-up call to all Hillary supporters. We must redouble our efforts in the coming weeks,” Mook said in a message, titled “Wake Up Call.”

In the memo, Mook said the Clinton campaign is proud of the more than $469 million it has raised so far but warned it must keep fundraising, Politico reported.

“We remain behind the historic pace that President Obama set in 2012, raising $520 million during the same time frame. With only three months to go, it is critical that we close the gap between President Obama’s record-level fundraising and the pace we are currently on,” he said in the memo.

“Falling short of the resources raised in 2012 will require us to scale back from the investments President Obama’s campaign made in organizing, data and other critical tools.”

The campaign is planning to send Clinton, her husband and her running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), on a fundraising tour of the country. In August, the three will headline more than 80 fundraising events in more than 25 states, according to the news outlet.

Mook in the memo urged donors to make investments now.

“Our ability to reach targeted voters and turn them out will be decided by the number of organizers we can hire now and the volunteers they can start recruiting today,” he said in the memo.

“A dollar raised in August has a much greater impact than one raised in October, especially if Trump closes the gap with us.”

Trump has just recently started fundraising with small donors, Mook said in the memo, and “has clearly seen significant growth in the last month.”

“We anticipate that his grassroots donor support will continue to grow dramatically in the final three months,” Mook wrote.

“Trump also has the capacity to write his campaign an eight or nine figure check, which could single-handled tilt things in his favor.”

Clinton over the weekend sent an email to donors warning that she doesn’t have the presidential contest locked up. The subject line of the email was: “He may still beat me,” and in it, she talked about Trump’s July fundraising numbers and warned that the GOP nominee could still win.
