Trump on immigration plans: ‘There’s really quite a bit of softening’

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday said there is “softening” in some of his immigration proposals.

{mosads}”Oh, there’s softening. Look, we do it in a very humane way, and we’re going to see with the people that are in the country,” Trump told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham when asked where the softening was in his plans, according to an excerpt of the interview.

Trump said he “obviously” wants to get gang members, drug peddlers and drug deals out of the country.

“We’ve got a lot of people in this country that you can’t have, and those people we’ll get out. And then we’re going to make a decision at a later date once everything is stabilized. I think you’re going to see there’s really quit a bit of softening,” he said.

“I feel strongly, but I feel strongly that we have to stabilize the border; we have to absolutely stabilize the border, and we have to have a strong border, otherwise we don’t have a country.”

Trump on Wednesday laid out a 10-point hard-line immigration plan, shutting down talk that he is softening on immigration.

During the speech, the GOP nominee vowed to build a wall along the nation’s border with Mexico and warned that no one in the country illegally would be exempt from deportation.

“As with any law enforcement activity, we will set priorities. But unlike this administration, no one will be immune or exempt from enforcement,” Trump said during the more than hourlong speech.

“Anyone who has entered the United States illegally is subject to deportation. That is what it means to have laws and to have a country. Otherwise we don’t have a country.”

Questions were raised last week on Trump’s immigration positions after Trump indicated he would be open to some “softening” on his immigration position. Trump has previously called for a “deportation force” to remove the 11 million undocumented immigrants estimated to be in the United States.
