Pence suggests voters don’t care about Trump’s tax returns
The American voters don’t care about Donald Trump’s tax returns, which he still plans to withhold until the IRS completes an audit, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said Monday.
Pence, Trump’s running mate, dismissed Trump’s tax returns as a media fascination that voters don’t care about.
{mosads}”As I travel around the country, I don’t hear a lot of people talking about tax returns. They’re talking about the future of the country,” Pence said on CNN.
“I respect the role of the media … but I think the American people are concerned about their future. They’re concerned about a struggling economy.”
Pence confirmed that Trump likely wouldn’t release his tax returns before the IRS completes its ongoing audit.
The agency has said an audit would not preclude the Republican presidential nominee from releasing the returns.
Pence went on to say that the campaign has released all they are legally required to, namely the financial disclosure reports Trump filed in May.
“He’s also under no obligation to release his tax returns. It’s become a tradition,” Pence said, noting that Ronald Reagan only released one year of his returns as was annoyed by the invasion of privacy.
“Donald Trump and I and the other candidates in this race have fully complied with what the law requires.”
Pence on Friday released his own tax returns, dating from 2006-2015.
