At a Tuesday campaign event, the GOP nominee accused Democrats of trying to manipulate the system with criticism of Holt's colleague, Matt Lauer, for not fact-checking Trump in real time during a recent presidential forum.

"In trying to hit Matt, they are trying to game the system, game the ref," Trump said Tuesday during a rally in North Carolina. "But I think Lester Holt will be very fair, but a lot of people will be watching to see if that’s true.”

On Monday night, Trump told Fox News's Bill O'Reilly that he has "respect for Lester," but accused him of being a Democrat.

A Time magazine report found that Holt has been a registered Republican in New York since 2003.

Trump has also taken issue with CNN's Anderson Cooper as a debate moderator, saying he is "very biased."
