Rep. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) won the endorsement of EMILY's List for the state's open Senate seat, the group announced on Tuesday.

The endorsement is a boost for Hirono, who is facing off against former Rep. Ed Case for the Democratic nomination to fill retiring Sen. Daniel Akaka's (D-Hawaii) seat. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) is also said to be considering running for the seat.

In a statement, EMILY's List, the Democratic political action committee that backs candidates who support abortion rights, praised Hirono for championing "the rights of women."

"Mazie Hirono has spent her career fighting for the people of Hawaii and we are excited to endorse her campaign for the United States Senate," EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock said.

"She has consistently championed the rights of women and families in Hawaii and we need her strong voice in the Senate holding the line against the Republican war on women," Schriock continued. "The EMILY’s List community was proud to support her in the past, loves her fighting spirit, and looks forward to helping her make history as the Senate’s first Asian-American woman in November."

EMILY's List is powerful fundraiser for women candidates. In the 2009-2010 cycle, the group said it raised more than $38.5 million to support women candidates.
