Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.) is thanking the public for its support after he tweeted a photo of himself with his transgender granddaughter.

Honda's original tweet, on Wednesday, showed support for his granddaughter, Malisa, who is 8, and got over 8,500 retweets.

Honda is vice chairman of the LGBT Equality Caucus in Congress and is the founder and chairman of the Anti-Bullying Caucus.

He discussed Malisa's story in an interview with the San Jose Mercury News on Thursday, saying that she had told him that it was alright to go public with her story.

People will say "it's just a phase or they'll grow out of it," Honda told the newspaper. "But we have to be a little bit more in tune with what youngsters are telling us. From there, we can develop better solutions, be more thoughtful."
