Kevin Johnson, the mayor of Sacramento, Calif., and a former NBA star, repeatedly punched a protester in the face after getting hit with a pie during an event, witnesses say.

{mosads}Witnesses told the East Bay Express that a protester ran up to the mayor during a dinner event Wednesday night and threw a pie in his face. The protester then yelled something at Johnson, prompting his response.

According to the report, the mayor hit the protester repeatedly, landing as many as 10 punches.

Some sources said the protester, later identified as 32-year-old Sean Thompson, was beaten to a “bloody pulp.”

Thompson was arrested and is facing potential felony assault charges for attacking a public official, according to the report.

After the incident, the mayor talked to the police and then apologized to the 200 people who attended the event.
Later in the evening, Johnson tweeted that he is “doing fine” and that he is thankful that police were on the scene.
