New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said he doesn’t care about “political optics” after he earned national attention Monday over photos of him on a beach he closed last week.

“I think my poll numbers show that I don’t care about political optics,” Christie said at a press conference. “What I care about is doing what’s right and wrong.”

Christie was polled as the most unpopular governor in at least 20 years last month, clocking in with an approval rating of 15 percent.

Christie made the comment at a press conference where he announced that he signed a budget for New Jersey, reopening state parks and beaches in time for the Fourth of July.

He received major backlash for photos of him spending time on a beach he closed over the weekend. The pictures quickly went viral.

Christie mocked the coverage, saying, “They’ll win a Pulitzer for this one.”
