Jimmy Carter: Trump ‘very careless with the truth’

Former President Carter had some harsh words for President Trump, telling CBS News he is “careless with the truth.”
“I think it’s well-known that the incumbent president is very careless with the truth,” he said.
{mosads}“I think I went through my campaign and my presidency without ever lying to the people or making a deliberately false statement, and I think that would be a very worthwhile thing to reinsert into politics these days,” Carter added.
Carter said he does want the president to succeed.
“I’m not here to criticize the incumbent president, just wish him well and I pray for him,” he said.
The Washington Post’s Fact Checker reported in August that Trump had made 4,229 false or misleading claims since taking office.
A poll earlier this year found perceptions of the president’s honesty fall along partisan lines. The NBC News/Survey Monkey poll in May found that 94 percent of Democrats surveyed think that Trump tells the truth at most occasionally or less frequently, while 66 percent of Republicans polled think he tells the truth all or most of the time.
