West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin III (D) said Monday that he will not appoint himself to fill the seat of the late Sen. Robert Byrd.

Succession plans for Byrd's seat remain in limbo after Congress's longest serving member passed away early Monday morning.

Manchin told the Associated Press  that there is no timetable for him to appoint a replacement for the West Virginia Democrat. Byrd's term was to expire in 2012.

Under West Virginia law, the governor has the authority to appoint an interim replacement and decide whether to call for a special election.

Manchin is thought of as a potential candidate to run for Byrd's seat in 2012.
