Samuel Wurzelbacher, or “Joe the Plumber,” as he became known during the 2008 presidential campaign, is one step closer to becoming a U.S. congressman.

Wurzelbacher won the Republican nomination for Ohio’s 9th district and will face off against Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) this fall. He won the primary by 51 percent to 49 over Steven Kraus.

{mosads}Wurzelbacher first hit the scene after a video surfaced of him questioning President Obama on his economic policies during a 2008 campaign stop.

Wurzelbacher was given the moniker “Joe the Plumber” by the McCain-Palin presidential campaign, which used him as an example of disenfranchised blue-collar voters they said would suffer under Democratic policies. It later came out that he is not actually a licensed plumber.

In the years since, Wurzelbacher has capitalized on his newfound fame as a motivational speaker and author.

Wurzelbacher’s general-election opponent, Kaptur, defeated fellow Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich in her primary contest.
