Report: Former Rep. Weiner considering run for office
A report in the New York Post says family and friends believe the onetime congressman, who resigned in disgrace last year following a Twitter scandal, wants to run again for office.
Weiner is considering a bid for New York City public advocate or mayor in 2013, according to the report. A source told that paper Weiner had spoken to former staffers about returning to work for him if he returned to elected office.
{mosads}“I’ve heard he is seriously thinking about getting into a citywide race in 2013 and would like it to be mayor,” said a source quoted by the paper.
Despite the scandal that forced him from office, Weiner could be a formidable candidate. He still has an approximately $4.5 million campaign war chest.
Last month, though, Weiner denied that he was planning a political comeback. Appearing on a radio program to discuss the recent Supreme Court ruling upholding President Obama’s healthcare law, Weiner said he was “just going on my favorite radio show and talking about a subject that’s very dear to me.”
He again expressed regrets over the scandal.
“I still have regrets,” Weiner said. “I paid a very high price, but I’m still committed to the same things I was. I have a 6-month-old that I have to go and feed now, so I have to say my life is filled with great joy, but as I said when I resigned, I feel great regret for the people I let down.”
The seven-term lawmaker resigned last year after admitting that he had sent revealing photographs and messages to women on Twitter.
