Riffing off his famous election postmortem for Democrats, President Obama pardoned a pair of Thanksgiving turkeys on Wednesday, saying, "It feels pretty good to stop at least one shellacking this November."

The president pardoned "Apple" and "Cider" in the annual White House ceremony before a crowd in the Rose Garden. The 45-pound fowl hail from Foster Farms Wellsford Ranch near Modesto, Calif., but will be spending the rest of their days at George Washington's former estate — Mount Vernon in Virginia.

"You are hereby pardoned from the Thanksgiving dinner table," a grinning Obama, accompanied by daughters Sasha and Malia, told the turkeys.

The birds will be on display for the "Christmas at Mount Vernon" program at Mount Vernon through Jan. 6, after which they will be moved to a livestock area on the grounds.

In addition, two dressed turkeys from Jaindl’s Turkey Farm in Orefield, Pa., were donated to Martha’s Table, a Washington-area charitable organization.
