Boehner, Cantor to meet with families of Newtown victims

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) will meet with families of victims of the Newtown Elementary School shooting on Thursday, according to a Boehner aide.

{mosads}Boehner and Cantor will meet with the families, who are visiting Washington, D.C., to mark the six months since the shooting massacre that left 26 dead, including 20 children.

“Speaker Boehner’s heart goes out to the victims of this senseless tragedy and their families,” Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said according to CNN. “He wants to hear their stories and talk about ways to reduce the culture of violence in our country.”

Since the shooting, some of the Newtown, Conn., families have been lobbying Congress to pass stricter gun laws.

After the Senate failed to pass legislation that would strengthen background checks on gun purchasers, Erica Lafferty, whose mother was killed in the shooting, said she was “disgusted” that Congress had failed to act.

New gun laws face a tough struggle in the face of opposition from the National Rifle Association and conservative lawmakers.

Boehner has repeatedly said that the Senate should act first on gun control.

President Obama and Vice President Biden have both vowed to continue to seek new laws to stem the nation’s epidemic of gun violence.

“I personally haven’t given up, nor has the president,” Biden said Monday.
