Hillary and Bill Clinton hail Supreme Court ruling on DOMA

Bill and Hillary Clinton have praised the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act signed by the former president into law.

{mosads}”By overturning the Defense of Marriage Act, the court recognized that discrimination towards any group holds us all back in our efforts to form a more perfect union,” the former first couple said in a statement released hours after the court’s decision on Wednesday.

Clinton signed the act after it was overwhelmingly approved by Congress, but has turned against it this year.

The Clintons also specifically congratulated Edie Windsor who filed the lawsuit challenging the constitutionally of DOMA.

“We are also encouraged that marriage equality may soon return to California,” the two Clintons said. “We applaud the hard work of the advocates who have fought so relentlessly for this day, and congratulate Edie Windsor on her historic victory.”

President Clinton called for the Supreme Court to overturn the law in an op-ed earlier this year.

Hillary Clinton, who many expect to run for president in 2016, endorsed gay marriage earlier this year.
