The White House is expected to announce its special envoy for peace in the Middle East will resign.
According to The Associated Press, the White House is expected to announce Friday that Special Envoy George Mitchell will resign after serving in the role for roughly two years. His job was to work towards negotiating a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.
Prior to his role as special Mideast peace envoy, Mitchell, a former senator from Maine who served as majority leader from 1989 to 1991, served as a special envoy in Northern Ireland during the Clinton administration and was able to broker a peace agreement there.
Mitchell is reportedly stepping down for "personal reasons."
