Obama said last June that stimulus funding had prevented the economy from getting worse. While "things are still tough, they just aren’t as bad as they could have been," he said.

Even as the Republican contenders enter the home stretch for the first primary vote in Iowa, Romney and the Democrats have mostly aimed their fire across party lines.

The Democratic National Committee released a new video on Friday targeting Romney for not releasing his tax income returns. And Romney continues to lash Obama in his speeches, resting comfortably at the top of the polls and apparently keeping his eye on future prospects.

"We’re out in the cold and the rain and the wind because we care about America. He just finished his 90th round of golf,” Romney said of Obama at an outdoor event in Iowa on Friday.

Obama is in Hawaii with his family for their annual vacation over the holidays. His reelection campaign manager and press secretary have kept the target on Romney through the holidays, keeping up a long-standing Twitter war with Romney's senior campaign aide, Eric Fehrnstrom.
